The Republican leadership in the United States House, including Majority Leader Dick Armey, Majority Whip Tom DeLay, GOP Conference Chairman John Boehner, and Rep. Bill Paxon conspired to oust then-Speaker Newt Gingrich in the biggest attempted coup in modern American politics. The four men came together in a move that largely destroyed their political aspirations – with the notable exception of Boehner – and damaged Gingrich’s reputation for years. 

The four came to Gingrich independently and gave him an ultimatum, step down or be ejected by your own party. The group was halted after it was revealed that Gingrich wanted Paxton to be his successor. Soon afterward the plan fell apart, but the damage was done.
