Yet polling indicated that the ban had the support of either a majority or plurality of voters. While civil discourse has become a critically endangered phenomenon, one thoughtful discussion on the ban’s merits occured on PBS between George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley and former acting solicitor general under President Obama Neal Katyal. Turley correctly predicted the courts would ultimately evaluate the law’s constitutionality and not speculate on the possible motivations behind it. His opinion differed sharply with Katyal, who compared Donald Trump’s 2015 statement for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on” to his travel ban years later. Although it faced several legal challenges, the Supreme Court upheld the ban in 2018.
