New York City Mayor Eric Adams Urges Protesters to ‘Control Themselves’
In a press conference on Monday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell discussed the security measures being taken ahead of former President Donald Trump’s arraignment. The two officials stressed that as of midday Monday, there have been no credible or specific threats to the city. Despite this, Mayor Adams recognized that anticipated protests and the unique nature of the situation could potentially cause tension.
Mayor Adams warned at City Hall.
“Control yourselves, New York City is our home, not a playground for your misplaced anger. We are the safest large city in America because we respect the rule of law in New York City. And although we have no specific threats, people like Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is known to spread misinformation and hate speech, says she’s coming to town. While you are in town, be on your best behavior. As always, we will not allow violence or vandalism of any kind. And if one is caught participating in any act of violence, they will be arrested and held accountable no matter who you are.”

Increased Police Presence and Intermittent Road Closures
Sewell warned that New Yorkers might see an increased police presence in certain areas of the city and intermittent road closures over the next few days, particularly in Manhattan. He urged people to use mass transit to avoid delays.
Legitimate, Lawful Expression Without Violence or Destruction
Sewell also emphasized that violence and destruction are not legitimate, lawful expressions and would not be tolerated in the city. The NYPD’s job is to facilitate and safeguard people’s rights to express themselves while maintaining safety and security in the city.
Preparation and Lack of Concern
Deputy Mayor Philip Banks assured the public that the NYPD and all of the city’s public safety apparatus are always prepared to ensure everyone’s safety during events like Trump’s arrival. Meanwhile, Adams expressed confidence in the NYPD’s ability to pivot and shift based on the circumstances that they are facing, and he was not overly concerned about the former president’s arrival.
Trump’s Arraignment and Indictment
Trump is expected to arrive at the New York City courthouse at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, hours before his scheduled arraignment in front of Judge Juan Merchan at 2:15 p.m. The details of his indictment are still under seal but are expected to relate to alleged 2016 “hush money” payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal.
Expected Motion to Dismiss
Trump’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, expects to file a motion to dismiss whatever charges the grand jury has indicted Trump for in this case. The proceedings are expected to take 15 to 30 minutes, with extensive security around the building expected to search everyone in the courtroom twice. Trump is likely to use a side entrance to the building, and the exact details of his arrival will not be known until shortly before his arrival for security reasons.
