After a national scandal in which the Biden administration was caught flagging parents as “domestic terrorists” for questioning liberal education policies, five United States senators now reveal the Justice Department was asked to target parents opposed to sex change surgeries on children.
U.S. Senators Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) Ted Cruz (R-Texas,) Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) allege, in a published letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland that the Justice Department engaged in a “patterned abuse of investigative authority to police the speech of Americans and stifle the ongoing policy debate over whether minors should receive experimental gender reassignment procedures.”
After public reports broke that several hospitals were performing sex change surgeries on children, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, and the Children’s Hospital Association wrote an Oct. 3, 2022 letter to Garland demanding the Justice Department silence the supposed “disinformation,” though the claims were entirely accurate
It is illegal and unconstitutional for the Justice Department to silence or censor speech over political content.
The request comes after the Biden Justice Department received, and followed, a similar order from the National School Board Association, flagging law-abiding parents as “domestic terrorists” for publicly criticizing Critical Race Theory or COVID-19 school closures.
It’s part of a new, and larger, effort by liberals to silence opponents by declaring that the existence of opposition poses a threat to their physical or mental safety, and that police resources should be directed to censoring criticism and arresting political opponents.
“If there is a bedrock principle in American self-governance, it is that the federal government has no place in quashing or criminalizing civic discourse. The issue of how best to treat minors struggling with their gender dysphoria is the subject of ongoing and emotional debate, which Americans have a protected First Amendment right to fully engage in. The strength of our democracy is dependent on the ability of all citizens to peacefully participate in public debate without fear of persecution from your agency or any other,” said the senators.
“We call upon you to reaffirm that you will faithfully protect the First Amendment rights of all Americans to peacefully debate this and all other policy questions, irrespective of viewpoint. The weaponization of federal law enforcement agencies like the DOJ, in order to produce preferred policy outcomes, cannot continue – our democracy depends on it,” the senators concluded.
“The senators also demanded any and all communications by Garland or any other DOJ employee with the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, and/or Children’s Hospital Association or any of their representatives about this issue, in order to conduct congressional oversight and hold accountable everyone responsible for this outrageous policy,” a statement from Johnson’s office reads.
