Democrats Biggest Problem In 2024? Americans Question President Biden’s Fitness for Another Term.

Concerns About Biden’s Age

A poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research revealed that 77% of respondents believe President Joe Biden is too old to be effective for another four years. This includes 69% of Democrats and 89% of Republicans. Respondents across age groups held this view, although older Democrats were more supportive of his 2024 bid. Respondents described Biden as ‘old’ and ‘confused.’

Only 50% of the U.S. adults surveyed thought Trump was too old for office, with a higher proportion of Democrats than Republicans feeling this way. Despite this, a portion of the respondents associated Trump with negative descriptors: 15% said ‘corrupt’ or ‘crooked,’ 11% said ‘bad’ or other negative terms, and 8% said ‘liar’ and ‘dishonest.’

Even though it’s not favorable for the former president, Donald Trump, to be associated with negative terms, at a time when he is currently faced with four separate indictments, the relatively low percentages of respondents using terms like ‘corrupt’ or ‘crooked’ (15%), ‘bad’ or other negative terms (11%), and ‘liar’ and ‘dishonest’ (8%) suggest that public perception of Trump is not as bad as it could be.

Only 3% of participants in the survey selected ‘confused’ as the primary descriptor for Trump (now 77 years old) and a mere 1% opted for terms like ‘old.’

Support for Age Limits in Government

Americans indicated a desire for age limits across all branches of government. Specifically, 67% favor requiring Supreme Court justices to retire by a certain age, 68% support age ceilings for House and Senate candidates, and 66% support age ceilings for presidential candidates. Additionally, only 24% of Americans want to see Biden run again, while 30% say the same about Trump. Majorities are reluctant to support them if they are nominated again.

The poll also highlighted that Biden’s age is a significant concern even among Democrats, with 28% mentioning it. Trump’s negative comments were centered on his moral standing and conduct rather than his age. Respondents also expressed concerns about the divisive nature of both leaders and the negative impact on the country.

The poll was conducted from August 10-14, 2023, with a sample of 1,165 adults from NORC’s AmeriSpeak Panel and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

Comments

  1. Yes, Biden is too old and febble minded to do anything other than sleep, eat and watch TV. BUT the bigger problem that very few talk about is the DEM policies that Biden is using. If another dem is elected will they secure the border?? NO, they want open borders and vote down border wall/security. Will they lower taxes??? NO they want more money for green stuff. Will they open our oil and gas industry? NO they only promote green energy and always voter against oil/gas/coal/nuclear energy causing our prices to rise dramatically and require that we get our energy from countries that want to destroy us and destroy the environment. Don’t look at the shiny object -Joe’s senility- and miss the real problem.
