President Biden’s Twitter along with the White Houses Twitter have been posting multiple times a day in an attempt to fearmonger as the Midterm elections draw closer. One tweet crossed the line, and as a result, @WhiteHouse on Twitter received a context/ fact check pinned under the tweet from Twitter. Twitter in the past used to allow Democrats to slide with nearly anything, including lies immediately before an election, however, with Elon Musk at the helm, those days appear to be coming to an end.
The tweet by @WhiteHouse credit President Biden for the “biggest increase in their Social Security checks in 10 years.” After outrage from Twitter users who wondered why this tweet wasn’t fact-checked, Twitter added a context note underneath the tweet.
After the fact check was added, credibility was ruined for the tweet, and the White House Twitter staff removed the tweet.
Throughout 2020, fact-checking on Twitter was frequently used to shut down many different talking points. Among tweets frequently deleted included; Hunter Biden news updates; COVID-19 and vaccination information; those who questioned the integrity of elections, and tweets by the sitting President of the United States, Donald Trump. Up until Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, Democrats were rarely if ever fact-checked.
