A top U.S. senator is demanding the Federal Bureau of Investigation clear the air over allegations that then-Vice-President Joe Biden was offered millions of dollars in bribes by a Ukrainian businessman, who recorded the offer.
A 2020 FBI memo details how a “credible” informant told agents he or she was aware of the plan to bribe Biden, and that tapes existed proving the offer. The FBI investigated, but has never confirmed or denied any evidence or proof of the offer or tapes.
Now U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, wants to the FBI to tell the Senate what it knows about the allegation, and the larger allegations of improper ties between the Biden family and Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company.
“A recently discovered FBI document dated June 2020 contains allegations from a foreign national source who said there are fifteen audio recordings of phone calls between a Burisma executive and Hunter Biden, and two audio recordings of phone calls between the executive and then-Vice President Joe Biden. To date, the FBI and Justice Department have not answered questions about their handling of the matter,” Judiciary Committee Republicans explain in a statement.
“The Steele dossier was said to be true and it was a lie. The Hunter Biden laptop, we were told it was a fake and now it seems to be accurate. I don’t know what to tell you, but I do know this. We have an obligation to answer these questions. This [source document] is not a Fox News story. This comes from the FBI itself,” said Graham in a Judiciary Committee hearing.
“Here’s what I’m saying. If [the source’s allegations were] dismissed as not being credible, I think the public needs to know what led to that. If it is part of an ongoing investigation, we need to back off because we can’t interfere in an investigation. But if there’s no ‘there’ there in the view of the intelligence community, the FBI, I want to know how they concluded that. What did they do? And if it is being looked at seriously, then we’ll let the system work,” Graham added.
Graham pointed out the FBI must confirm whether or not the claims are true, as false information has been weaponized in the past.
“So none of us believe, quite frankly, that false information or shady information can’t be used against [Republicans] because it was,” Graham concluded.
