On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court made a potentially transformative ruling on a case where college athletes and the NCAA were pitted against each other.

According to CBS News:

The Supreme Court on Monday said the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) cannot strictly limit certain benefits for student-athletes as a means of protecting their amateur status, delivering a blow to the behemoth organization as it battles efforts to allow collegiate athletes to receive some financial compensation.

The high court ruled unanimously in favor of the student-athletes, with Justice Neil Gorsuch delivering the opinion. The ruling is the most significant involving antitrust laws and the athletic association to come from the Supreme Court in decades.

Led by former University of West Virginia running back Shawne Alston, the dispute before the court centered around the NCAA’s rules restricting certain academic-related benefits for student-athletes, such as post-graduate scholarships, internships, computers and science equipment. A separate battle is playing out in state legislatures and on Capitol Hill over whether athletes can be compensated for use of their name, image and likeness.

President Donald Trump-appointed Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote in his decision, “The NCAA couches its arguments for not paying student-athletes in innocuous labels. But the labels cannot disguise the reality: The NCAA’s business model would be flatly illegal in almost any other industry in America. All of the restaurants in a region cannot come together to cut cooks’ wages on the theory that ‘customers prefer’ to eat food from low-paid cooks. Law firms cannot conspire to cabin lawyers’ salaries in the name of providing legal services out of a ‘love of the law.’ Hospitals cannot agree to cap nurses’ income in order to create a ‘purer’ form of helping the sick. News organizations cannot join forces to curtail pay to reporters to preserve a ‘tradition’ of public-minded journalism. Movie studios cannot collude to slash benefits to camera crews to kindle a ‘spirit of amateurism’ in Hollywood”

Kavanaugh concluded, “Price-fixing labor is price-fixing labor. And price-fixing labor is ordinarily a textbook antitrust problem because it extinguishes the free market in which individuals can otherwise obtain fair compensation for their work.”

    1. This case was so simple to decide even crazy people could get it correct, as evidenced by the unanimous decision!

  1. Get rid the “Anti-Trust ” protection for all of the NCAA and Pro Sports team that way it will stop outrageous salaries& benefits for coachs and players

  2. What they should do is rule that ALL Professional level Sport teams are required to pay all taxes. Especially on Stadiums and income for the teams through the sale of everything on game days. It is time to end the hand outs to Billionaires and the spoiled brats tgeyhidstioly games for a living. If they an’t respect America they should not get any benefits from being in America.

  3. And the new can or worms opens…

NOW the college with the biggest budgets will buy the best athletes from around the world.

How long before they UNIONIZE and destroy college sports the same way the murdered pro sports?

  4. The SUPREME COURT needs to rule that the MEDIA CANNOT PREFER A CERTAIN POLITICAL PARTY!
The dumbocraptic media controls America through PROPAGANDA.

  5. It’s really sad because in Alston’s case he wasn’t allowed to use his scholarship benefits to buy his own food, so as to manage the dietary restrictions imposed by a pre-existing medical condition.
It’s unfortunate that an organization like the NCAA chose not to distinguish between something like that and the sort of thing that occurred in Eric Dickerson era SMU or UNLV in the Larry Johnson days.

  6. THESE COLLEGE ATHLETES….DO GET PAID????? THEY ALL GET A SCHOLARSHIP AND OTHER PERKS TO GO TO THAT SCHOOL…….PLUS….THEY GET A CHANCE TO COMPETE FOR THE PROFESSIONALS…….WHICH OTHERS DO NOT GET(GENERALLY!). IF THEY GET COMPENSATION IN COLLEGES….THE COLLEGES WILL NOT GIVE FULL SCHOLARSHIPS!!!!! THAT IS LIKE GETTING PAID TWICE!!!!!! IT COST A FORTUNE TO GO TO THESE SCHOOLS IN WHICH A LOT OF STUDENTS (PARENTS) CAN’T AFFORD??????????

  7. BS 85% of college athletes are black, in any other field that would be racist, not giving people of color a change at academic awards. BS BS BS

  8. LISTEN UP…ANYONE Who USES SOMEONE’S IMAGE…NAME and LIKENESS DESERVES COMPENSATION. THAT Goes Also for the CAPITOL VIKING SHAMAN and MYSELF. My FULL LENGTH POSTERS and MY BOOK…BOOKof CHIAKIA. From SamuraiQueen. 😄😄😄

  9. My gut is still telling me the Conservative Judges were fully co operating with President Trump in order for Military to take over as the Judges in most Courts are corrupted by money, blackmail and worst

  10. Since most players are black how are whites being compensated with money.I know it is only a problem when non whites don’t get a slice of the pie.Time for whites to whine.
