An annual dinner for Washington, D.C.’s political and media elites is Ground Zero for a massive COVID-19 outbreak, striking politicians who partied maskless over cocktails after spending two years locking Americans in their homes and forcing them to wear masks.

“More than a dozen guests who attended Saturday night’s Gridiron Club dinner — including two Cabinet members, two members of Congress and a top aide to Vice President Harris — have since tested positive for coronavirus, sending ripples of anxiety through a city on the cusp of restarting its traditional social whirl after a two-year pause,” The Washington Post reports.

The Post noted few attendees at the white tie gala event wore masks, even though many of the attendees publicly support mask mandates for others.

Among those testing positive is Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) who supported forcing Americans to wear masks in public and slapping heavy fines on members of Congress caught not wearing masks in the Capitol.

Others testing positive after attending an event they wanted banned for the rest of the country are Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Tex.,) Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Attorney General Merrick Garland and Jamal Simmons, the communications director for Vice President Harris.’’

“The Washington Post has learned of about a half-dozen journalists as well as members of the White House and National Security Council staffs who said they tested positive after the event. Their names are being withheld because they have not announced their status publicly,” the newspaper reports.

Several of the staffers who tested positive traveled to Europe with Harris and President Joe Biden after being exposed to the virus.

More positive test results are expected to be disclosed.

“About half of the cases appeared to have been clustered at three tables, he said, and the club was taking steps to notify anyone who sat next to or across from the infected guests,” the Post added.

“There is no way of being certain about when they first contracted COVID,” Tom DeFrank, president of the Gridiron Club, tells the Post. “But they did interact with other guests during the night and we have to be realistic and expect some more cases.”

The Gridiron Dinner is an exclusive event for D.C.’s elite, featuring comic sketches and speeches.  The President normally attends, but Biden did not appear at this event.
