MSNBC Commentator Malcom Nance stunned the audience of the Joy Ann Reid show on Tuesday morning when he revealed that he had quit his job with the network in order to fight against Russia in the war in Ukraine.
As The New York Post reports:
Malcolm Nance, the former naval intelligence officer who has served as an on-air analyst at the Comcast-owned cable network since 2007, appeared on Monday’s episode of Joy Reid’s nightly show “The ReidOut” wearing military fatigues and combat gear.
…
Nance, who is the author of several books about counterterrorism and national security, appeared as an analyst on MSNBC as recently as Feb. 28 — days after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Many conservatives on Twitter mocked Nance after the announcement, noting his poor knowledge of firearms safety and lack of combat experience:
People get me all wrong. I completely support Malcom Nance, and in fact I encourage the rest of MSNBC and CNN follow his lead and leave the country with him

Everyone who’s been in the Navy and knows what a senior chief CT actually does is laughing hard at this. Hope they show him which end the bullet comes out of before they send him out lmao https://t.co/DKvXwe9mtf

I truly hope this is a stunt. This goofball has a terrible reputation, and would he captured, creating an international incident. Legitimately hope this is for views / press, and he’s not actually going into a war zone.

Memo to Mr. Nance: With all due respect to your prior military experience, here is some prospectively invaluable legal advice: You better think twice. Your joining forces with the government of Ukraine could be construed as taking an oath of allegiance for a foreign government or military. Title 8 USC Section1481 generally permits enlisting in the service of a foreign military to fight against a country with which the US is engaged in hostilities, at this point, it is legally questionable whether or not the US is currently engaged in hostilities against, or from Russia. Therefore, if the US State Department determines your enrollment in the service of Ukraine is not by reason to defend the United States, you could very well find your US citizenship lost, and potentially any military veteran benefits, and other economic benefits you now or prospectively receive. In such event, you would be stateless, which brings with it many other complications. I would urge you to have your attorney consult with general legal counsel at the US State Department accordingly, BEFORE you suit up and head into the battle.
Go hit the front lines, and take Joyless Reid and her 400 wigs for her nappy head with you!
