Following former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels’ announcement that he will be choosing to not run for Indania’s open Senate seat on Tuesday, the NRSC has decided to back Rep. Jim Banks for the state’s open Senate seat.

Rep. Jim Banks is a Republican U.S. Congressman representing Indiana’s 3rd congressional district. Banks has been serving in the U.S. House of Representatives since January 2017. Prior to serving in Congress, he served in the Indiana Senate. Both Rep. Victoria Spartz and former Rep. Trey Hollingsworth were also mentioned as possibilities for the open Senate seat, however, the NRSC decided to go in the direction of Banks to hopefully fill the open seat in the U.S. Senate.

Following former Gov. Mitch Daniels’ decision to not run for Indania’s open Senate seat, when he announced, “After what I hope was adequate reflection, I’ve decided not to become a candidate for the U.S. Senate,” adding, “With full credit and respect for the institution and those serving in it, I conclude that it’s just not the job for me, not the town for me, and not the life I want to live at this point.”

Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), the NRSC chair, indicated today that the GOP campaign arm is going to wade into GOP primaries, breaking from his predecessor Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.). In a statement reacting to former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels’ decision to pass on a Senate run, Daies said “I have the utmost respect for the years of service Governor Daniels has given to Indiana and wish him well in the future,” adding that he’s “looking forward to working with one of our top recruits,” Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), who has already announced his campaign.

Indiana is seen as a lock for Republicans in this upcoming Senate race, as Donald Trump won the state by 16 points in 2020.
