Republican Senator Ted Cruz is now under fire after photos of him and his family leaving blackout stricken Texas for sunny Cancun surfaced online.
The past week of unseasonably cold weather and winter storms has left much of the state crippled, with millions of Texas stranded in their homes without electricity, heat or running water.
As the Texas Tribune reports:
WASHINGTON – As millions of Texans continued to suffer in subfreezing temperatures without power and water, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz traveled with his family to sunny Cancún, Mexico on Wednesday where the temperatures were around 80 degrees.
First spotted at an airport by a social media user who posted his photo, there was an immediate outcry overnight that a U.S. senator would travel out of the state amid the worst storm in many Texans’ lifetimes…
Typically, in a disaster, a federal officeholder’s primary role is to communicate to the federal branch — including the president — the immediate needs of the district or state. The first official move for a U.S. senator is to send a letter to the president after a governor makes a request for a federal emergency disaster declaration. Cruz and U.S. Sen. John Cornyn wrote such a letter on Feb. 14.
In the throes of a crisis, the onus of executing aid is mostly on a state’s governor. But, as state leaders, senators often help coordinate relief efforts with other public officials, engage in a public information campaign and great care is taken to ensure the senator is in the public eye and showing concern.
Cruz later responded to the accusations, admitting that he and his family had, in fact, flown to Mexico and trying to explain why:

After calling the situation in Texas infuriating, Cruz said that the explanation for the trip was that it was at the behest of his young daughters and that he would be immediately returning to Texas.

Important question to be answered is, was this an impromptu or planned vacation? There may not be much he could do back home, and by leaving, they would be reducing the power load on the system, ever so small that may be. And he did return when needed. Cruz didn’t support and pass legislation for highly expensive and highly subsidized, totally unreliable, intermittent, often unavailable solar and wind power. And it’s not even Green as it destroys vast amounts of habitat and wildlife. He fought it. So why should he have to suffer in its predictable consequences. Furthermore it is outrageous, unconscionable, and immoral to force rolling blackouts on everyone and make everyone suffer. The blackouts should be precisely targeted at all those Greens and progressives who lobbied for solar and wind and closed down coal and nuclear and are now promising to close down oil and gas. The problem with Texas’ power shortage started with the green energy push, shutting down coal and gas fired power plants, replacing them with windmills and big solar “farms”. The freeze stopped the windmills (just like an airplane’s propeller and wings, ice causes them to stop functioning). and snow & ice covered the solar panels greatly reducing or stopping them from functioning. Two of the decommissioned coal fired plants are in the county where I reside.
This is another non issue blow up by the left. I live in Texas and don’t begrudge Senator Cruz at all. What was Senator Cruz supposed to do about the power loss? No, the left is trying to make Cruz look bad to justify their BS like the Colorado governor telling Coloradians to stay home because of COVID then he went to Mexico. Or how about the Maryland governor locking down his state then going across state lines to a restaurant with his family.
