What vaccines have been announced?
With over 36 vaccines in clinical trials worldwide, three companies reported final stage results of 90% or higher Covid-19 prevention effectiveness.
Pfizer
In partnership with Germany’s BioNTech, the American maker of Lipitor and Viagra announced that an early analysis found their vaccine to be over 90% effective on Nov. 9. After final results were calculated, the pharmaceutical giant announced their vaccine was 95% effective at preventing Covid-19 on Nov. 18.
Moderna
The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotechnology company announced that preliminary research indicated their vaccine was 94.5% effective at preventing Covid-19. Two weeks later, final data revealed promising results: The vaccine is 94.1% effective at preventing a general infection, but 100% effective at warding off the manifestation of severe cases.
AstraZeneca
The British-Swedish biopharmaceutical company developed a vaccine with Oxford University and announced it was up to 90% effective on Nov. 23. Recently, their trial data has come under scrutiny when the company released results for two different protocols. Two full doses of the vaccine given 28 days apart resulted in 62% efficacy, but reducing the initial dose to half, followed by a full second injection increased symptom prevention up to 90%.
