A powerful Democrat congressman once impeached for taking bribes escaped an investigation into his latest sex scandal.
The House Ethics Committee announced they were dropping an investigation into whether Florida Congressman Alcee Hastings had sex with an employee after he revealed he had been married to the staffer since January 2019.
It is against House rules for members to have sexual relationships with staff. California Congresswoman Katie Hill resigned from the House last year when it was revealed she had extramarital sex with male and female staffers.
It’s not the first sex scandal for Hastings.
“Roll Call reported in December 2017 that the Treasury Department paid $220,000 to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit involving Hastings,” POLITICO reports. “No ethics charges were brought in the case, and Hastings denied any improper behavior. Hastings also said he was not aware of the legal settlement.”
It’s also not the first scandal for Hastings, who was appointed a federal judge in 1979.
Just two years later Hastings was charged with accepting a $150,000 bribe. He was acquitted of the charge when his co-defendant refused to testify, even after being jailed for contempt.
The U.S. House of Representatives, then controlled by Democrats, took up the case, impeaching Hastings on 11 counts of bribery and perjury. The Senate voted to remove him, making him just the sixth judge in American history to be impeached and removed from the bench.
In 1992 Hastings would be elected to serve in the very House that impeached him.
Despite the federal criminal charges against him, his impeachment and removal for bribery and perjury, and his sex scandals, Democrats made him a senior member of the House Intelligence Committee, where he has access to classified information.
