Former Biden Energy Department official pleads “no contest” to theft charges
Samuel Brinton, a former Biden Energy Department official, has pleaded “no contest” to misdemeanor theft charges at the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. According to reports, Brinton was caught on video allegedly stealing a woman’s luggage from the carousel at the airport. Brinton agreed to pay the victim over $3,500 in restitution and received a suspended 180-day jail sentence. He will serve no time behind bars assuming he can stay out of trouble.

Investigators in Las Vegas noted that Brinton exhibited several signs of abnormal behavior while taking the victim’s luggage, which are cues suspects typically give off when committing luggage theft. Specifically, Brinton pulled the victim’s luggage from the carousel and examined the tag, then placed it back on the carousel, looked in all directions for anyone who might be watching, or might approach, and quickly walked away with it. Brinton only checked one piece of luggage, which he had already claimed from the carousel, so he had no reason to be examining or taking any other pieces of luggage.
Brinton’s past controversies
Brinton made headlines in the past for his controversial behavior, including dressing in drag and boasting online about his puppy role-play fetish while wearing BDSM gear, which many felt was unprofessional for a government official to be sharing. In November 2022, he was accused of stealing a woman’s luggage in Minneapolis. He reportedly flew into Minneapolis−Saint Paul International Airport with American Airlines without any checked bags. He left the airport in an Uber and checked into a hotel with the blue bag, which belonged to a female passenger who flew into MSP on a Delta flight from New Orleans. The bag and the contents inside, valued at around $2,325, had gone missing from the baggage claim area. Video surveillance footage from Dulles International Airport in Virginia later showed Brinton returning from Europe with the same bag.
Avoiding the felony charge
By pleading “no contest” to misdemeanor theft charges in Las Vegas, Brinton avoided facing a felony charge and serving up to 10 years in prison. However, if convicted on the felony charge he faces in Minnesota, he could face five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
