The Oscars has now slapped actor Will Smith with an unprecedented 10 year ban from its award ceremonies in response to him slapping comedian Chris Rock.

As The New York Post reports:

The Oscars just delivered more than a slap on the wrist to Will Smith: The academy’s board of governors has banned this year’s Best Actor winner from attending the awards ceremony for the next decade after he assaulted comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 ceremony.

The academy’s 54-member board convened for a reportedly “contentious” Zoom meeting on Friday morning to discuss “possible sanctions” against the actor — who will, as it turns out, be allowed to keep his trophy.

In a subsequent statement released Friday afternoon, the board stated it has “decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.” The final ruling means Smith is still eligible to be nominated for — and win — Oscars if his work merits them.

However, in the official statement, Board President David Rubin described Smith’s behavior as “unacceptable and harmful.” He also admitted that the academy did not “adequately address the situation” during the live telecast.

The decision comes after Smith officially resigned from the academy, which means he can no longer vote on future oscar nominees.

Comments

  1. Will Smith still gets to keep his Oscar, so banning him from being present at the Academy Awards ceremony for 10 years is no big deal. Some very big stars don’t attend anyway.

  2. Enough with the Will Smith and the Chris Rock escapades! We Americans have enough distractions in our everyday lives with President “Shenanagins” gaffes and horrible decisions he is being coerced to make by whoever is running the Democrat Agenda at the moment because he isn’t capable of doing anything on his own besides accepting money for favors

  3. Not enough punishment! Assault is by law illegal and should be punishable in a “Court Of Law”!

  4. C’mon man! That was no assault. It’s called ”Battery”. Definition. 1. In criminal law, this is a physical act that results in harmful or offensive contact with another person without that person’s consent. 2. In tort law, the intentional causation of harmful or offensive contact with another’s person without that person’s consent.

  5. How about penalyzing the inappropriate joke about his wife? That comedian caused the whole scene! Keep him gone for 15 years!!!

  6. Big woop! They Should have taken his trophy, THAT would have been appropriate AND it would have sent the message that the Academy doesn’t condone violence of any kind by ANY one! This says, “Oh, we know we aren’t supposed to condone violence, but it was Will Smith, and we just can’t take an Oscar away from an “African American” because then we might be called racist. BUT if he were white we would have taken his Oscar for sure. This is just to appease people!”

  7. This is California, right? He’ll be back in two years when the Oscars need another ratings boost.

  8. I personally support Will Smith. He courageously and definitively objected to the often callous and demeaning comments from the entertainment and news media.
