Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) contradicted the view now held by most Republicans about Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and the Ukrainian cause more generally in a new video that has since gone viral.

RALEIGH, N.C. — U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina told supporters he thought Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was a “thug”—a comment that runs counter to the overwhelming share of Republicans with a favorable view of the leader fending off a military invasion from Russia.
“Remember that Zelenskyy is a thug,” Cawthorn said in a video obtained by WRAL News. “Remember that the Ukrainian government is incredibly corrupt and is incredibly evil and has been pushing woke ideologies.”

At an event in Rutherford County Thursday night, Cawthorn told supporters, “Honestly, both governments in both Russia and Ukraine are incredibly corrupt and very vile.”
On Twitter, he sought to justify calling Zelenskyy a “thug” by accusing the Ukrainian president of pushing “misinformation on America.” He posted a link to a conservative blog post with examples, including a story of Ukrainian soldiers on Snake Island who were feared to have been killed in a Feb. 24 Russian attack later being reported as “alive and well.”
It was unclear exactly where the video was taken, but likely at one of the events Cawthorn attended in the last week.

Our leaders should make it clear that there will be no Marshall Plan to rebuild Ukraine like we did Europe after WW11. Russia cannot win this war and when it’s over and Ukraine is rebuilt, the UN should total up all of the costs to rebuild and hand Russia a reparations bill. And the longer he keeps destroying, the larger the bill will be. It will, also, include payments to families who have lost their breadwinners. Better have your cyanide capsule ready. It isn’t going to be pretty for you.
on stopworldcontroldotcom, I saw photos that had been used to report war atrocities in ukraine, with the same exact photo next to it that had been used years ago for a different reason. there were several of such photos. now when I look at stories on the war, I note the source of the photo; sometimes it’s from getty images, which are stock photos people buy

I grew up in NC, went to Perquimans County High School and to East Caroling University, and Representative Cawthorn should be ashamed of himself for calling Selenskyy a thug – under the circumstances in Ukraine at this time. Yes, governing in Ukraine has been less than stellar, but Zelenskyy is a hero, John Elliott, Sun City West, AZ

Rep. Cawthorn, I contributed to your election campaign and think you’re a good man, but you need to re-think this. We’ve been down this road before:
Battista was corrupt, they told us; so we abandoned him and got Castro and the Communists.
Chiang Kai Shek was corrupt, they told us; so we pulled the rug out from under him and got Mao and the Communists.
Diem was corrupt, they told us; so we engineered his assassination and got the Communists.
I’ve lectured in Ukraine on constitution reform. Their government isn’t perfect (come to think of it, neither is ours), but they are trying to establish a free constittional government.
Back in the early 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine was left with more nukes than any other country except the U.S. and Russia. Clinton pressured Ukraine to give up its nukes for nonproliferation purposes, in exchange for a firm commitment that the US and the UK would protect their sovereignty. This is a firm commitment, every bit as binding as NATO.
Do we keep our word? I hope so.
