Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Darin T. Hoover, 31, of Salt Lake City, Utah

Hoover was recruited in high school and his father, Darin, said “He was dead set” on joining the Marines. He was on his third tour in Afghanistan and was ready to re-up with the military next year when his enlistment period expired after twelve years.

“He took those responsibilities very seriously — of training the other men he was with and making sure they were trained the way he was trained, and better,” Darin Hoover remarked about his son.
