The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) scaled back distribution restrictions on the abortion pill, which will effectively allow the medication to be sent to patients through the mail.
Due to the pandemic, the FDA modified their rules to permit chemical abortions to be prescribed through telemedicine and sent throught the mail, after a study determined administering the drug via USPS did not “not appear to show increases in serious safety concerns (such as hemorrhage, ectopic pregnancy, or surgical interventions).”
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said the decision meant “that many patients in need of termination of early pregnancy will be able to access safe, effective mifepristone by mail, rather than having to risk avoidable COVID exposure to themselves and their clinicians.”
However, the Supreme Court ruled that the pills could no longer be shipped through the mail post-pandemic in January, when the Trump administration appealed the decision. As of Thursday, the FDA’s modified restrictions will once more allow the abortion drug to be routed through a mail carrier.
The FDA conducted a risk evaluation and found that the benefits of reducing the prescribing strain on health care systems and allowing increased patient access, outweighed the potentially negative side-effects.
The agency removed the “in-person dispensing requirement” that involved healthcare settings, medical offices, and hospitals, but did add the requirement that dispensing pharmacies must be certified. The changes open the door to abortions by mail, and possibly even online purchasing.
On the state level, nearly half already bar or restrict access to abortion pills. Texas limited the use of abortion mediation after seven weeks of pregnancy with a law passed in early December. The legislation makes dispensing the aborting-inducing pill through the mail a criminal offense.
Indiana, Oklahoma, and Montana ban use of the medication after ten-weeks, but enforcement has been blocked in the latter two states.
