Hailed as Chi-Raq and once named “America’s mass shooting capital” for high rates of gun violence, the city’s deadliest day occurred on May 31, during the onset of the George Floyd protests. In response to violent rioting that caused more than $120 million in damages to local businesses and a murder rate that soared 55% to 748 victims, Mayor Lori Lightfoot proposed an $80 million budget cut to the Chicago Police Department.
