An announcement has been made regarding the discovery of a debris field within the designated search zone for the lost Titanic submersible known as the Titan, a five-seater vessel. Notable components of the wreckage include the submersible’s landing frame and back cover.

According to information shared by the BBC, dive expert David Mearns revealed that the president of the Explorers Club, which has ties to the diving community, confirmed the presence of a landing frame and a rear cover from the submersible among the retrieved debris.

According to the BBC:

Dive expert David Mearns told the BBC the president of the Explorers Club – which is connected to the diving community – says the debris includes “a landing frame and a rear cover from the submersible”.

In terms of the submersible’s distinctive design, the back cover is situated at the rear of the vessel, while the landing frame is a small structure that facilitates the docking procedure. These findings strongly suggest that the debris indeed belongs to the Titan.

The US Coast Guard, on Thursday, verified the existence of a debris field within the search area. The Titan had been on a voyage to explore the remains of the Titanic, which are located around 12,500 feet underwater and approximately 400 miles away from the Newfoundland coast in Canada.

The US Coast Guard Northeast wrote on Twitter:

“A debris field was discovered within the search area by an ROV near the Titanic. Experts within the unified command are evaluating the information,”

At 2:35 p.m. ET, new information emerged indicating that the wreckage discovered around 500 meters from the front of the Titanic belongs to the external structure of the missing submersible. The search for the crew is currently underway. Subsequently, at 2:45 p.m. ET, OceanGate released a statement expressing their sorrowful conviction that those aboard the submersible, including CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, have tragically perished.

The U.S. Coast Guard has officially confirmed the heartbreaking loss of life for the passengers aboard the Titan in an update provided at 3:04 p.m. ET.
