After a long time coming Federal prosecutors have finally filed criminal charges against New York District 3 US Representative George Santos. Santos has remained a point of contention following a continual stream of lies since he first took office in January. Now in the released indictment documents, it has been revealed that Santos was indicted with thirteen charges.

Charges Revealed

Santos turned himself into the federal court in New York Wednesday, at which point the indictment files were released. Those charges include seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds, and two counts of making materially false statements to the House of Representatives.

By now you are probably familiar with Santos’ name. The freshman Representative from New York has been the center of a media storm since he stepped foot into the U.S. Capitol building in January. Santos has been the center of attention and controversy in the U.S. House of Representatives after being caught lying about his mother dying in the World Trade Center attack on 9/11/01, his Jewish heritage, as well as his work and education history, Santos has also been alleged to have connections to a Ponzi scheme, as well as allegations that he used a fake animal charity to scam disabled veterans in 2016, promising to raise money for their dog’s cancer treatment, however, he’s alleged to have kept the funds raised for himself.

After allegations of lying surfaced, Santos started his political career in the House. Despite the accusations and calls for his resignation surfaced, he continued to work until he was eventually removed from his committees. Santos remained undeterred and even announced his intention to run for reelection, going against the wishes of his constituents. However, his career came to a standstill when he was charged with multiple offenses Tuesday.

The House Ethics Committee voted unanimously in March to launch an investigation against Santos. Now with a formal case and double-digit charges against him, it appears that the previously untouchable politician may finally face consequences. His constituents, and colleagues, have long called for his resignation. Here is to hoping the charges against him finally impact his employment status.
