The United States blasted Russia for the “reckless and dangerous” anti-satellite bombing that caused astronauts at the International Space Station to evacuate to avoid the debris.
“Russia has demonstrated a deliberate disregard for the security, safety, stability, and long-term sustainability of the space domain for all nations,” U.S. Army Gen. James Dickinson, U.S. Space Command commander, decried in a statement.
Russia reportedly tested a direct-ascent anti-satellite missile on their own decommissioned satellite, which resulted in a detritus field in the Earth’s orbit that has more than 1,500 pieces of trackable debris.
He classified the test as “simply irresponsible” and noted that the debris it created “will continue to pose a threat to activities in outer space for years to come, putting satellites and space missions at risk, as well as forcing more collision avoidance maneuvers.”
The immediate threat was to the seven astronauts, including four Americans and two Russian cosmonauts, currently residing on the International Space Station.
NASA said that the astronauts were woken up at 2 a.m. EST and told to shelter in place in their spacecraft for two hours, while the space station passed “through or near” the cloud of debris three times. They continue to be at risk from objects that are too small to be tracked as they orbit 220 nautical miles over Earth.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said that he was “outraged” by the action that he considers both irresponsible and destabilizing.
“With its long and storied history in human spaceflight, it is unthinkable that Russia would endanger not only the American and international partner astronauts on the ISS, but also their own cosmonauts,” he remarked. “Their actions are reckless and dangerous.”
State Department spokesperson Ned Price noted the US has repeatedly warned Russian officials about the danger of such tests, and would now be consulting with partners and allies about a response, but will make it very clear that “we won’t tolerate this kind of activity.”

Probably was as I bet any nation that could would do something similar but maybe not so stupidly. Biden and his bosses are now plotting what to do and blame it on trump. Ok so I am not a Trump fan per say. I am a trump policy supporter and I wuld vote for Trump. But Trump has done more for America than the last, well many presidents but he doesn’t need to call names. I think trump, if elected, should have a cabinet of all new people, no politicians, he should appoint all new people…just a thought
What Trump managed to accomplish against ALL impossible odds and attacks was nothing short of miraculous. I’m still amazed. We were doing great under Trump in SO many areas, including military readiness and strength. We, the American people, were robbed not only of our choice of POTUS in the last election, we were robbed of our freedom and sovereignty.
Red China tested a destroyer satellite a few years ago on one of their obsolete satellites and scattered debris all over the place up there.
I’m surprised there’s still room to launch and orbit anything around the Earth anymore with all of the junk floating around for miles up there, everything from screws to old satellites.

In the last weapons race, the USSR was known to be somewhat wreckless, but so was the US in an effort to get or stay ahead of the other; now we have this going 3 ways, which makes it all the more hazardous. Sad to say, none of the 3 gives heed to the safety of even their own citizens, let alone the rest of the world’s citizens.

The current ISS occupants are NASA astronauts Megan McArthur, Mark Vande Hei, Kimbrough, Hopkins, Walker and Glover; JAXA’s Noguchi and Akihiko Hoshide; the European Space Agency’s Thomas Pesquet; and cosmonauts Oleg Novitskiy and Pyotr Dubrov.
