The Most Wasteful Projects Democrats Are Spending the Coronavirus Stimulus On

Liberal states and cities are rushing to spend the billions given to them through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

Democrats unsurprisingly found new ways to waste taxpayer money on their pet causes.

Here are the most irresponsible uses of federal funds intended to help those struggling financially due to the coronavirus:

Free College

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) is spending millions to provide free college for essential workers. Meanwhile, thousands of small business owners are floundering under her draconian lockdown orders.

Guaranteed Basic Income

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter (D) created an 18-month guaranteed basic income program to provide $500 monthly to 150 families through an executive order. Even St. Paul’s congressional representative, Democrat Betty McCollum, said that Carter’s program appears to fall outside of federal guidelines and should be recouped by the U.S. Treasury.

Community Relations Specialists

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell (D) spent $629,000 to hire community relations specialists. We’re not sure what that means. We doubt Mayor Caldwell is either.

Mass Transit Funding

Mass transit systems have been hit hard by social distancing and the increasingly popular option of working from home. The problem is Congress’ supposed solution is likely to exacerbate waste, fraud, and abuse. That’s because transit agencies that don’t spend all their grants under the CARES Act will receive less funding in the future. Therefore, grantees have no incentive to reduce their spending.

Economic Development Administration

The EDA received $1.5 billion through the CARES Act, more than five times its annual salary. The agency offers a heavy-handed, big-government approach to “assist” financially distressed communities.

The Congressional Research Service confirmed that the flood of taxpayer money dramatically increases the likelihood of fraud, which the EDA is notorious for.

In years past, the EDA has thrown your money at constructing model pyramids, wine tasting rooms, and professional football practice facilities.
