Donald Trump and Ben Carson’s improbable rise to the top of the Repbulican field as political outsiders has shocked everyone in the media and bucked the conventional wisdom. As time has moved on, pundits and the poliical class are starting to accept that both of these candidacies are very real. With that in mind, the two candidates have teamed up for their first power play. As Ben Jacobs reports:

The two leading Republican contenders for the White House are threatening not to participate in the next presidential debate.

In a letter signed by both Donald Trump and Ben Carson, the candidates threaten not to participate in the next GOP debate scheduled to be held on 28 October in Boulder, Colorado, if certain conditions are not met.

In particular, they are demanding that there be opening and closing statements and that the total running time of the debate not exceed two hours. The letter reads: “Mr. Trump and Dr. Carson do not and will not, agree to appear at a debate that is more than 120 minutes long including commercials [sic] break. Further the debate must include opening and closing statements from all the candidates.”

CNBC has agreed to their demand. Viewers will no doubt be pleased by the brevity of the format, and it’s hard to see how this doesn’t benefit the frontrunners. A condensed format leaves limited time for the establishment favorites candidates to attack them. The length of the last debate allowed former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina the opportunity to lay out a broad vision and take on Trump, and vaulted her into the top tier.
