On the day when the Trump administration unveiled its historic peace plan to alleviate tensions between the Israelis and Palestinians, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was indicted on corruption charges.

The charges came after Netanyahu withdrew his request for immunity.

Per U.S. News & World Report:

The country’s attorney general filed a formal indictment against the leader on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust in connection with three separate cases, the BBC reported.

Netanyahu, who is in the U.S. and scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump to unveil a long-awaited plan on the Middle East, wrote in a Facebook post that he withdrew his request for immunity because he would not have gotten a fair hearing. Israel’s parliament had planned to debate his request Tuesday.

He called the situation a “continuation of personal persecution” and criticized his opponents for going forward with the debate as he was meeting with Trump.

Netanyahu said parliament scheduled the debate at a “fatal hour for the people of Israel, while I am in the United States on a historic mission to design the permanent borders of Israel and ensure our safety for future generations.”
