NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio called out Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday for trying to strong-arm him into firing his spokeswoman after she publicly accused the governor of sexually harassing her.

De Blasio ratted out his longtime opponent Cuomo’s bad behavior, going as far as comparing him to a “Shakespearean” villain during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” broadcast.

“He demanded I fire her as a way of showing that she was wrong,” he said, referring to a “critical statement” she made that infuriated Cuomo. “I mean, it’s endless, and it’s small, and it’s petty, and it got worse.”

“And I think this is part of the tragic, kind of, Shakespearean reality here — power corrupted this guy more and more each year,” he continued.

Though the New York City mayor didn’t name the aide, his former press secretary Karen Hinton identified herself as Cuomo’s target to reporters on Wednesday.

Hinton, who served with the mayor for nearly a year before she turned in her resignation in May 2016, said the “critical statement” was one she made to the New York Times about how state and city Health Commissioners botched a 2015 press conference during an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease.

She said that de Blasio “freaked out” after Cuomo’s response to her comments. “[De Blasio] calls me and basically says, ‘Shut up, stop talking about it because [Cuomo’s] going to accuse me of killing New Yorkers over Legionnaires’.”

Her tenure at the mayor’s office was over soon after. “I only lasted nine more months after that, in part because of continued attacks from the governor,” she remarked.

Hinton told reporters in March that Cuomo hugged her “very long, too long, too tight, too intimate” in December of 2000, and when she pulled away, he grabbed her “for another intimate embrace,” while he was physically “aroused.”
