Former President Donald Trump has released a video on social media in which he vowed to eliminate all “essential” imports from China within four years if he were to be elected again. In the five-minute video, Trump criticized President Joe Biden’s “pro-China” agenda and accused him of supporting policies that harm American manufacturing, raise taxes on American production, and kill American jobs.

Trump’s comments echoed calls from Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to “declare independence” from China.  Additionally, he plans to adopt new rules to prevent U.S. companies from investing in China and stop China from purchasing American assets that do not serve American interests. Several states are also considering legislation to prohibit land purchases by individuals and companies with ties to China.

Trump would go on to state that his administration upon hopefully taking office in 2024 will revoke China’s most favored nation trade status and phase out all Chinese imports of essential goods over a four-year period, including electronics, steel, and pharmaceuticals:

“We will revoke China’s most favored nation trade status and adopt a four-year plan to phase out all Chinese imports of essential goods, everything from electronics to steel to pharmaceutical,”

“Joe Biden claims to support American manufacturing, but in reality, he is pushing the same pro-China, globalist agenda that ripped the industrial heart out of our country. It ripped us apart, Biden and the globalists support raising taxes on American production,”

“They support more crippling regulations, killing American jobs. They support skyrocketing domestic energy costs and they support massive anti-American multinational agreements that send our wealth and factories overseas.”

The former president accused Biden and globalists of supporting a pro-China agenda that harmed American manufacturing, raised taxes on American production, and implemented crippling regulations that killed American jobs. Trump’s comments echoed calls from Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to “declare independence” from China.

According to the United States Trade Representative, the United States imported $450.4 billion worth of goods and services from China in 2020, leading to a $310.3 billion trade deficit. Trump plans to adopt new rules to prevent U.S. companies from investing in China and stop China from purchasing American assets that do not serve American interests. The former president also plans to eliminate federal contracts for any company that outsources to China, saying:

“We will also adopt new rules to stop U.S. companies from pouring investments into China and to stop China from buying up America, allowing all of those investments that clearly serve American interests… We’re not going to allow bad things to happen to our country anymore. And we will eliminate federal contracts for any company that outsources to China.”

“The heart of my vision is a sweeping pro-American overhaul of our tax and trade policy to move from the Biden system that punishes domestic producers and rewards outsourcers, to a system that rewards domestic production and taxes foreign companies and those who export American Jobs.”

Several states are considering legislation to prohibit land purchases by individuals and companies with ties to China. At the federal level, Republican Representatives Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Dan Newhouse of Washington have introduced legislation to bar farmland purchases by Chinese entities.

Trump stated that his vision is to overhaul tax and trade policies to reward domestic production and tax foreign companies and those that export American jobs. He believes this is necessary to move away from the current system that he claims punishes domestic producers and rewards outsourcers.
