• President Joe Biden became the first sitting president not to observe 9/11 at either Washington D.C., the Pentagon, Manhattan, or Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
• Instead, Biden made a two-hour visit to Joint Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska to meet with service members and first responders during a refueling layover, following his trip from Vietnam.
• During Biden’s Vietnam visit, he held a peculiar press conference with several unusual moments.

Harris Steps in at Ground Zero

• Vice President Kamala Harris attended the 22nd anniversary commemoration of the 9/11 attacks at Ground Zero in New York.

Notable Attendees & Traditions

• The tradition has been for presidents to spend 9/11 at one of the crash sites or host a ceremony at the White House.
• Other notable attendees at Ground Zero included former NYC mayors Rudy Giuliani, Mike Bloomberg, and Bill de Blasio. Current NYC Mayor Eric Adams was also present.
• Presidential hopeful and Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, and his wife also attended the Ground Zero service.
