For Krista Simpson Anderson, The Unquiet Professional (TUP) was a way to heal from losing her husband, SSG Michael Harrison Simpson, to an IED attack in Eastern Afghanistan on May 1, 2013.
“When service members join the military they dedicate themselves to making the world a better place. Mike’s mission was undoubtedly to free the oppressed which is the Special Forces motto ‘De Oppresso Liber’”
This year’s Virtual Memorial Mile (TUPMile) TUP is honoring its namesake for its 10-year anniversary. Ten years since Mike sacrificed his life for our great nation and ten years that TUP has been serving the military community providing healthy and empowering opportunities to Gold Star and Surviving families, active duty, National Guard/Reserve, retirees, veterans, and their families.
The Virtual Memorial Mile’s mission is to honor the fallen and give a voice to their families. “We want the family to share about the service member’s life and how they are #MotivatedByTheirLives today.” As an all-volunteer organization, they are able to allocate over 97% of all funds raised to their programs.
This year Caliber Home Loans (part of the NewRez family) held six in-person walks for the 2023 TUPMile. Caliber’s Military Lending division supports the military community through many different initiatives nationwide.
“What do we do for Memorial Day?” Anderson asked
“Every year we celebrate the life we have been given and the love we have experienced from Mike and our community. We celebrate the men and women who have lived, loved, and gone before us in service to our great nation. We talk about Mike, share stories, laugh, cry, and show gratitude for it all. We acknowledge that our grief is a direct reflection of the great love that has been shown to us. We say their names and we vow to LIVE the life they died to protect.”
Her suggestion for us all is “Consider talking about these men and women all year long, not just Memorial Day. Memorial Day is the time to throw a party, gather those you love, pause to reflect on our fallen, and LIVE a life worth dying for.”
