Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) fell at a hotel in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday evening following a private dinner and sustained injuries that required hospitalization, including a concussion. McConnell was attending a dinner for the Senate Leadership Fund, a political action committee aligned with him, when he tripped and fell. His office announced that he suffered a concussion and is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days of observation and treatment, as McConnell is 81 years old.

McConnell has a history of medical issues, including having polio as a child, which caused him difficulty in climbing stairs. He previously fractured his shoulder after suffering a fall in his Louisville home in 2019.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was among several senators who sent well-wishes to McConnell following his fall. McConnell’s office expressed gratitude to medical professionals for their care and to colleagues for their warm wishes.

Thursday morning, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer would take to the Senate floor, saying:

“I joined every single one of my colleagues in wishing Leader McConnell a speedy and full recovery.”

McConnell’s fall comes amid growing calls for his retirement from both sides of the political spectrum. However, the controversial senator has been actively involved in fundraising for Republican candidates, including a recent appearance at a fundraiser for Trump ally Jim Banks’ Senate campaign.
