Amid both Dan and Tanya Snyder exploring options on selling the Washington Commanders, along with the struggles the Washington Post has had in recent years, speculation has grown that Jeff Bezos is reportedly looking into buying the Washington Commanders and selling on The New York Post.  According to Forbes 2022 NFL valuation, the Snyder family-owned Washington Commanders are worth an estimated $5.6 billion, making them the 6th most valuable NFL team.

Bezos’ further involvement in the NFL could be a game-changer, as Amazon has been one of the most successful companies over the past decade and is one of the largest digital retailers in the world, and has also acquired the NFL’s Monday Night Football on Amazon Prime, their video streaming service.

If Bezos does decide to purchase the Washington Commanders, it will be yet another example of him expanding his technology empire and blurring the lines between traditional sports and digital streaming.  Bezos is no stranger to the NFL, as Amazon was an official sponsor of the 2017 Super Bowl and has had a strong presence in football for years, along with his exclusive partnership with Monday Night Football, and regularly attending games.

However, Bezos’ involvement in the Washington Post may be an issue for the Snyder family, as the Washington Post has closely followed and frequently reported on allegations directed toward Dan Snyder. These allegations include sexual harassment and verbal abuse by several former female employees of the team.

These allegations were made public in a series of articles by the Washington Post in July of 2020, and Dan Snyder has been in hot water ever sense. The articles also reported a culture of sexual harassment and misconduct within the organization. Snyder has denied the allegations and has said that he is committed to creating a positive and respectful work environment for all employees. It’s been speculated that the Snyder family may choose to hold off on selling the team and avoid selling to Bezos’ as a result of his involvement with the Washington Post.

According to The New York Post:

Chatter is growing that Amazon’s billionaire founder is looking to clear the way for a purchase of the Washington Commanders by selling the Washington Post — with speculation boosted last month by leaked video of publisher Fred Ryan disclosing layoff plans at an unruly town hall meeting.

The problem for Bezos reportedly is that the Commanders’ embattled owner, Dan Snyder, is still sore over the storied newspaper’s series of exposes alleging a toxic management culture at the team, where bosses including Snyder allegedly enabled sex harassment.

Some even believe that Snyder suspects Bezos, who bought the Washington Post in 2013 for $250 million, encouraged the tough coverage in 2020 in a bid to force him to sell him the team.

Last week, Bezos stoked fears about looming layoffs at the Washington Post during an awkward visit to the newsroom. A source close to the situation said Bezos told the paper’s senior staff in private meetings that he had no plans to sell the paper.

Furthermore, if Bezos does take over ownership of the Washington Commanders, it could pave the way for many other tech companies that have expressed interest in owning their own sports franchises. This would be a major step forward for the NFL, as tech companies have become increasingly important in the world of sports. With their innovative approaches to streaming and digital content, these companies could bring about new ideas that will help grow the league and further expand its reach.

All eyes are now on Bezos to see if he will be the one to break new ground for the NFL and become an owner of a team. He has already made his mark in other industries, and now it appears that Bezos may be ready to do the same with football. If he is successful, it could open up all new possibilities for tech companies who are looking to get involved in the world of sports.
