Transient New Yorkers are being moved back into homeless shelters after being forced to vacate the hotels they’ve been holed up in since the pandemic started.
More than 9,000 homeless people were housed in hotels under emergency coronavirus orders last July, when local shelters were unable to meet social distancing requirements. The decision to place them in luxury digs rankled residents of upscale neighborhoods that had been infiltrated by people who were prone to mental illness and substance abuse.
The city’s posh Upper West Side file legal action to remove more than 200 men from the Lucerne hotel after many were seen urinating in the streets, using drugs, and fondling themselves in public. The remaining 68 long-term guests were moved out of the hotel on Monday.
“It is time to move homeless folks who were in hotels for a temporary period of time back to shelters, where they can get the support they need,” Mayor Bill de Blasio announced last week.
“In shelters is where we can provide support, a variety of services, and that pathway out of shelter and into a better life,” de Blasio remarked. “Everything is ready to go, all of our planning is in place. We know exactly which shelters we’re going to be bringing people back to, they are being prepared.”
The order came on the heels of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s announcement that New York was lifting nearly all COVID-19 restrictions, as 70% of the state’s adult population had received at least one dose of the vaccine.
The Department of Homeless Services will empty out over 60 hotels in the next six weeks, with 1,500 homeless scheduled to be moved out of eight Midtown and Uptown hotels this week and transferred to dorm-style “congregate shelters” that sleep multiple people
