The effects of California residents driving clean energy vehicles aren’t what state officials had hoped for when they pushed their zero-emissions agenda on Earth Day.

While the West is experiencing a record-breaking heatwave, officials are begging electric car owners to refrain from charging their vehicles at night to avoid taxing the Golden State’s overextended power grid.

The California Independent System Operator (ISO) issued several “Flex Alerts,” with the backing of governor Gavin Newsom’s emergency proclamation, to conserve energy usage to help prevent service disruptions during June’s heatwave.

In addition to pulling the plug on electric vehicles, residents were asked to set their thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, avoid using all major appliances, and to turn off all unnecessary lights during the evening hours.

“The public’s help is essential when extreme weather or other factors beyond our control put undue stress on the electric grid,” said ISO CEO Elliot Mainzer. “We have seen the huge impact that occurs when consumers pitch in and limit their energy use. Their cooperation can really make a difference.”

Officials blamed the extreme heat for the grid’s inability to provide energy to all. “When temperatures hit triple digits across a wide geographic area, no state has enough energy available to meet all the heightened demand, primarily due to air conditioning use,” the ISO said.

But California is pushing for state residents to purchase exclusively electric automobiles. Last fall, Newsom announced that he was setting a 2035 target date to stop selling gas-powered vehicles.

He predicted that “zero-emission vehicles will almost certainly be cheaper and better than the traditional fossil fuel-powered car,” but hasn’t seemed to consider what effect fighting climate change will have on the California power grid.

  1. I have raising the issue of where will we charge all the cars that have no assigned night time parking.
I recommend that the self important dictator Gavin Newson be given the crutch foot kit. This is special COVID mask with a crutch foot that fits over the end of the nose, so that our fearless leader does not injure his nose walking into walls.

  2. Maybe these knot heads will give everyone that is not charging their electric car money to stay home from work. They might be able to rig up a gasoline generator to charge their electric car while driving to work.
And these communist nut cases want to rule our United States of America!

  3. We cannot use our AC when it is hot. We cannot water our yards d/t water shortage and yet everywhere I go in San Diego they are building new homes.
