Cochran, who served as the Senate Appropriations Committee chairman, resigned from the Senate in April 2018 because of health concerns.

The office of his successor, Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), announced his death on Thursday.

“Cochran’s family extends its gratitude for the support shown to the Senator by Mississippians over the years,” the office said in a statement.

Cochran served in Congress for 45 years.
