Conservative shock jock Michael Savage is an enthusiastic supporter of Donald Trump. Those who have listened to Savage for over a decade will recognize that Trump’s entire platform borrows heavily from Savage’s many bestsellers and classic radio rants about borders, language, and culture.
Still, until recently, it looked like Savage might have had it up to here with Trump. The San Francisco based host criticized Trump heavily for his tasteless comments about Heidi Cruz’s looks. For a while, it looked like Trump might lose his most loyal supporter.
How quickly things change. On the eve of the Indiana primary, Savage is wondering aloud why Cruz is still in the election, and he has some ideas. As the Daily Caller reports:
On Monday’s radio broadcast of “Savage Nation,” host Michael Savage spilled the beans on why Ted Cruz has not yet dropped out of the 2016 race.
“It’s over already,” noted Savage. “Everyone knows it already except Ted.”
“The only reason Ted is still in it is for the money. How many times have I told you that?”
“You know what kind of money is involved?” he continued. “And what that does for their fortunes in the future to keep their face in the public eye in terms of books and lectures and whatnot?”
We’re willing to give the principled Texas Senator the benefit of the doubt. This is a man who went to Iowa and stood on his principles about against the crony capitalist ethanol industry and won. There’s a large contingent of conservatives out there who are skeptical of Donald Trump’s newfound social conservatism, and many who are worried about his foreign and economic policy. For these people Cruz is either an ideal standard bearer or a late in the game compromise.
But if the Texas Senator should lose Indiana tonight, then the writing is on the wall. At that point, it might be worthwhile to discuss the candidate’s motivations.
