The scam orchestrated by two Democratic officials in Michigan, Jason Bauer and Mike McGuinness, involved more than resurrecting the dead – they made up a fake candidate to split the center-right vote.

During the height of the Tea Party movement in 2010, these two schemers decided they were going to create a mysterious candidate under the guise of being the one, truly principled Tea Partier.

Authorities stopped their plot before the midterm election.

Bauer, a former Oakland Country Democratic Party official, received one year of probation and $2,600 in fines. Former Oakland County Democratic Party Chair Mike McGuinness pleaded no contest to perjury and forgery.

Oakland County, Michigan is almost entirely in Michigan’s 11th congressional district. Although long regarded as a GOP stronghold, The Cook Political Report rates the open seat as Lean Dem.

Additionally, Michigan has competitive statewide elections. The most recent poll from the Senate race has Republican John James down three points to incumbent Debbie Stabenow.

The governor’s race is considered likely to go to Democrat Gretchen Whitmer, who leads her Republican challenger Bill Schuette by an average of 10 points.
