Communist China, along with fraudsters and criminals, can spy on Americans and even record
them through back door access to “smart devices” like Wi-Fi enabled TVs, refrigerators and
even air fryers, two U.S. senators reveal.
U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), member of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation
Committee and Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Chair of the Senate Commerce, Science and
Transportation Committee, introduced the “Informing Consumers about Smart Devices Act”
requiring consumers be warned about the risks that come with buying Wi-Fi enabled “smart”
devices.
“The bill would require the FTC to create reasonable disclosure guidelines for products that have
audio or visual recording components, such as refrigerators, washers, dryers and dishwashers
that are not clearly obvious,” Cruz’s office announced.
“Many consumers don’t realize the growing number of household devices and appliances include
cameras and/or microphones that are capable of recording them and also include Wi-Fi
capability to transmit data without their knowledge,” the statement added.
“American consumers should be aware when their appliances and everyday tech products have
the capability to record them through microphones and cameras – let alone the ability to transmit
through Wi-Fi. I’m proud to help author this bipartisan solution to help safeguard the privacy and
security of American homes,” said Cruz.
“It’s estimated that by 2026, over 84 million households will have smart devices – providing
connection and control over everything from your air conditioning to your air fryer,” said
Cantwell.
“Yet, most consumers expect their refrigerators to keep the milk cold, not record their most
personal and private family discussions. I’m happy to work with Senator Cruz on a bill that will
ensure consumers know whether their household appliances are capable of invading their
privacy,” Cantwell added.
Experts have also warned of “smart” cars with computer-controlled access, especially emergency
response vehicles, pointing out they can be hacked and remotely disabled during an emergency
or attack.

Another aspect of owning smart appliances is control of consumption. What if the smart bathroom scale can communicate with the refrigerator? The scale signals to the fridge that you are too fat, so the fridge locks the door. It then sends a new shopping list to the big box grocery store telling the pickers pushing around large carts only to pick nonfat items to include a lot of green leafy vegetables, but no root veggies like potatoes or carrots, because the consumer is getting too fat. p.s., don’t forget the watery nonfat milk.
I may need your help. I tried many ways but couldn’t solve it, but after reading your article, I think you have a way to help me. I’m looking forward for your reply. Thanks.
