The Hill reports that Rick Santorum, once a favorite of Hearland Conservatives, has dropped out of the 2016 GOP primary race. Rick Santorum, the winner of the 2012 Iowa Caucus, failed to enlist enough votes to gain a single delegate Monday night at this year’s Iowa Caucus.

Rick Santorum’s strategy has been to focus all his campaign’s efforts in Iowa, a natural constituency for this blue-collar and social conservative base. Having lost both of these groups to Trump and Cruz, Santorum had no where to go and registered a measily 1%. After this brutal defeat, he has come to realize that he no longer has a chance of gaining traction in this race.

Santorum is slated to give an announcement tonight on Fox News, where he might give his endorsement to other candidates. It remains to be seen if he will back Cruz or Trump.
