Ernest Hollings, commonly referred to as “Fritz,” was a WWII veteran who ran for Congress and won. He served South Carolina for many years as Governor of the state and eventually ran for U.S. Senate. Although he didn’t win his first time running for Senate he tried again and prevailed.
