The popular card game Uno will publish a “Nonpartisan” edition, with no red or blue cards, to appeal to users who want to avoid political discussions.
Uno maker Mattel did not cite any cases of political discussion ever being prompted by the presence of red and blue cards in Uno.
In the “Nonpartisan” version, those colors have been replaced with orange and purple.
“No red or blue cards means no taking sides!” a tagline splashed across the front of the box reads.
Additionally, the Nonpartisan Uno box, which is red in the common version sold by Mattel, is purple, which is a mix of red and blue.
If a player discusses politics during the game they can be shown a “VETO” card and lose a turn. The card is black with a red circle and line through the word “POLITICS.”
Mattel did not address the fact that “vetoing” someone is certain to start a political discussion.
Mattel also did not address the fact orange is often associated with Northern Ireland’s anti-Protestant extremist groups, which could trigger political and religious discussions, while purple is the official color of the democratic socialist Vermont Progressive Party.
While Nonpartisan Uno does not appear to be available on Mattel’s website, CNN reports it retails for $5.99 at Walmart.
Mattel also offers versions of Uno for the color blind, a special edition for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and versions featuring characters from popular movies.
