The House Ethics Committee has expanded their probe into Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib based on substantial evidence – including messages from the lawmaker’s cell phone – that she misused campaign funds

The announcement comes three months after the Office of Congressional Ethics unanimously voted to refer Tlaib for potential criminal violations.

Per TheBlaze:

Tlaib is suspected of violating campaign finance laws, and the texts released by the OCE show her making demands that may prove damning.

One set of texts have Tlaib telling her campaign that she was “sinking” and “struggling financially right now,” because of the election demands.

“So I was thinking the campaign could loan me money, but Ryan said that the committee could actually pay me,” she texted. “I was thinking a one time payment of $5k.”

In addition to various texts of Tlaib asking for money, the OCE released copies of checks made out to her from the campaign totaling thousands of dollars.

Tlaib ultimately received more than $45,000 from her campaign between May and December 2018. FEC regulations do allow for campaigns to pay candidates for “work performed up through the date of the general election.”

Documents reveal that Tlaib received $17,500 after the November 6, 2018, general election.
