The number of illegal aliens arrested trying to cross the U.S. border surged to its highest number in over a decade, with the number of illegal alien families setting a new record.
“During Fiscal Year 2019, which ended on September 30, U.S. Border Patrol agents and CBP officers apprehended more than 1,148,000 migrants who crossed the border from Mexico into the U.S., according to year-end numbers released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Tuesday in El Paso,” reports Bob Price, a Texas-based reporter for Breitbart. “The El Paso Sector witnessed the largest percentage increase of illegal border crossings in all categories (RELATED: These Countries Prove Border Walls Work).
“So last month it was down to 52,000,” CBP Acting Commissioner Mark Morgan announced in a press conference. “But that’s still a significant increase from this time last year.”
“That’s still at crisis levels,” said Morgan.
The number of families attempting to cross the border is also growing.
“The apprehension of family units was not tracked in 2007, but this year marks a record for the category–473,000. This number is nearly quadrupled 2018’s report of 107,490 migrant family apprehensions. Prior to that, there had never been more than 100,000 family apprehensions in a single year,” reports Price.
“During FY2019, Border Patrol agents apprehended 473,682 Family Unit Aliens, according to the 2019 Southwest Border Migration Report. This is an increase of nearly 350 percent over last year’s record apprehension of 107,212 family units. The apprehension of Unaccompanied Alien Children also increased by 52 percent to 76,020,” reports Price.
Officials report that the total number of illegal alien crossings has declined since May, but data going back ten years show that happens every year.
Data going back six years shows in nearly every year, illegal immigration levels rise from January to May when they peak. The numbers then begin a decline from May until the next January, when they begin to climb again.
The illegal immigration peak reached in May 2019 shattered a record. The nearly 150,000 arrests recorded that month were almost twice as many as the highest level recorded in any May in the last six years.
The surge comes after Mexico reportedly agreed to stem the flow of illegal aliens into the U.S. to avoid punitive new tariffs.
The White House has not responded to the new report, which could thrust illegal immigration back as a top campaign issue as voters enter the 2020 election cycle.
