Laura Loomer is used to adversity.
The controversial activist lost her Twitter account last fall after a reportedly Islamophobic attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN).
“I’ve been silenced in America,” Ms. Loomer said after losing more than a quarter-million followers. She remains adamant that she did not violate Twitter’s terms of service.
“My haters are celebrating today, and they are saying this is the end of my career, but I want everyone to know I’m just getting started. Everyone who knows me knows I don’t back down,” she vowed.
But, for the time being, more setbacks followed.
Facebook, Instagram, Medium, Paypal, Venmo, GoFundMe, Uber, and Lyft all banished Ms. Loomer for violating their terms of services over various alleged transgressions.
On more than one occasion, Ms. Loomer’s inflammatory rhetoric and antics have sparked widespread condemnation.
After a pedestrian bridge collapsed at Florida International University in March 2018 – killing six people – Ms. Loomer and fellow polemicist Milo Yiannopoulos posed for photos near the wreckage wearing shirts saying “Diversity Costs Lives.”
Still, Ms. Loomer remained undeterred, launching a campaign in August to unseat Democratic Rep. Lois Frankel in Florida’s 21st District.
Now, Federal Election Commission reports show those who heralded the far-right provocateur’s demise spoke too soon.
Despite her veritable excommunication by Silicon Valley’s tech giants, Ms. Loomer raised $154,000 between July 1 and September 30, 2019.
During the same period, Congresswoman Frankel raised $107,000.
“In no uncertain terms, this race is on,” Ms. Loomer declared in a fundraising email, adding, “I’ll admit, I was shocked when the numbers came in. I knew we would do well against the competition, but I didn’t expect to raise more than a four-term incumbent Democrat.”
Ms. Frankel has more than $1.1 million cash on hand.
The district is anchored on the north end of the Miami metropolitan area and includes the cities of Palm Beach and West Palm Beach.
Hillary Clinton easily won the popular vote here in 2016, 59% – 39%, despite losing statewide to Trump.
According to the Cook Political Report, the seat remains in the “Solid Democrat” category, meaning it is unlikely to become competitive.
However, Annie Marie Delgado, president of Trump Team 2020 Florida, a grassroots organization committed to President Trump’s re-election in the Sunshine State, believes Frankel is vulnerable.
And Loomer, as always, is ready to do battle.
