The United States and Turkey have agreed to a Turkish cease-fire in Syria, according to Vice President Mike Pence.

The dramatic development comes five days after Turkey launched an offensive into the northeastern part of the country. (CNBC.com)
 

“Let me say this also includes an agreement by Turkey to engage in no military action against the community of Kobani,” Pence said. “And, in addition, the United States and Turkey have both mutually committed to a peaceful resolution and future for the safe zone, working on an international basis to ensure that peace and security defines this border region with Syria.”

The announcement came after Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Prior to the Pence-Pompeo press conference, President Donald Trump tweeted about “great news” coming out of the meeting in Turkey, claiming that “millions of lives will be saved.”
