Saikat Chakrabarti, the controversial chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) best known for accusing House Democrat leaders of racism for not backing her “Green New Deal,” is leaving his job just days after Ocasio-Cortez met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
POLITICO reports:
“Instead of ‘fiscally conservative but socially liberal,’ let’s call the New Democrats and Blue Dog Caucus the ‘New Southern Democrats,'” Chakrabarti said in a tweet that he later deleted. “They certainly seem hell bent to do to black and brown people today what the old Southern Democrats did in the 40s.” [emphasis added]
Chakrabarti also attacked Rep. Sharice Davids (D-Kansas), one of the first Native-American women to enter Congress, over her support for a homeland security funding bill. “I don’t believe Sharice is a racist person, but her votes are showing her to enable a racist system,” Chakrabarti tweeted. That remark infuriated many Democrats, including party leaders. [emphasis added]
Chakrabarti says he’s leaving to take a new job with a non-profit promoting radical environmentalism, but he could spend more time talking with criminal defense attorneys than environmentalists.
Chakrabarti ran “Justice Democrats PAC,” which supported Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign at the same time he was Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign manager.
Federal law prohibits such “coordination” between PACs and campaigns.
In addition to what appears to be illegal coordination, Chakrabarti also appears to have made illegal and excessive contributions to candidates.
“The FEC sent a request for additional information to the Justice Democrats PAC, a far-left group that helped elect Ocasio-Cortez to Congress, on May 30 after conducting its preliminary review of the PAC’s amended July quarterly report from 2018. Ocasio-Cortez was listed as a governor of the group until recently,” The Washington Free Beacon reports.
“The FEC states that the amended report from Justice Democrats disclosed one or more contributions to federal candidates for the ‘retirement of debts incurred during the 2018 Primary election campaign’ and that the committees that received the payments themselves had ‘insufficient debts to warrant such a contribution’ from the PAC,” the Free Beacon reports.
It would appear to be an attempt to send excessive campaign contributions, over the legal limit, by describing them as “debt retirement.”
