Polls show supermajorities of Americans oppose impeaching President Trump.
But the biggest, wealthiest and most powerful campaign donors to Democrats support it, and that could lead Democrats to defy the will of the people and attempt to oust President Trump from office.
Fortune magazine reports:
…an analysis of CRP (Center for Responsive Politics) data on the top five contributors in the 2017-2018 cycle for each of the House Democrats calling for impeachment shows backing from a wide range of business and labor interests…
…The top contributor lists include donations from an organization’s PACs and individuals affiliated with the group, such as employees or owners. Based on those tallies, the contributor that appeared most frequently in the lists of top five donors to House Democrats calling for impeachment was the PAC of American Crystal Sugar, a Minnesota-based agricultural cooperative of sugar beet growers. The PAC was among the top donors to 14 of the 59 House Democrats calling for impeachment.
The PAC of the American Association for Justice, a trial lawyers group with more than 50,000 members, also appeared a dozen times in the lists of top donors. Contributions from PACs and individuals affiliated with several labor groups, including the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the American Federation of Teachers, and the Carpenters & Joiners Union, each ranked among the groups of top contributors for at least five members, too.
Contributions from PACs and individuals affiliated with several major corporations showed up in the lists, as well, including defense contractor Northrop Grumman and telecommunications giants Comcast Corp. and AT&T Inc.
But the most powerful money behind the “Impeach Trump” movement comes from Tom Steyer, the California ecosocialist billionaire.
“Need to Impeach, the advocacy group backed by liberal billionaire Tom Steyer is trying to increase the pressure on Democratic leadership to get behind impeachment proceedings for President Donald Trump,” the liberal news site The Daily Beast reports.
“… organizers at the group will kick off a new campaign to target 12 districts held by Democratic lawmakers who do not yet back impeachment. The group plans to spend $360,000 in the first few weeks of the effort, which will fund targeted digital ads, billboards, organizing activities, and events like so-called “Impeach-ins,” which are intended to make the case for impeachment,” the Beast reports.
“The new campaign by Need to Impeach comes as a growing number of House Democrats have begun calling for the launch of impeachment proceedings against the president. The group, along with others organizing for impeachment, believe that building support among voters in progressive districts is key to persuading lawmakers on the fence to take a stand,” the Beast reports.
“Some 60 Democrats have so far come out in support of launching an inquiry, accounting for a quarter of the party’s House membership,” the Beast notes.
“I will be dedicating 100% of my time and effort in 2019 towards Mr. Trump’s impeachment and removal from office,” Steyer announced in January.
His Need To Impeach group has over 6.6 million members, and he intends to spend $40 million this year on impeachment efforts.
