The parents of a decorated NYPD officer who was the first in the nation’s largest police force killed while serving in Iraq are challenging a Manhattan community board’s rejection to co-name a street after their son.

Community Board 1 voted 21 to 12 against co-naming West Broadway after Staff Sgt. Jimmy McNaughton, who was the first NYPD officer to be killed in the Iraq War.
Sgt. McNaughton was killed in August 2005 by a sniper while serving in the Army Reserves. His father, Bill McNaughton, said Tuesday on Fox & Friends that the board made the decision for “silly” reasons.
“I just don’t get it, plain and simple. I just don’t get it,” he said. “We thought it was a done deal and the community said no.”
McNaughton’s father said that the board denied the co-naming because of the potential to confuse taxi drivers by having too many street signs on a pole.
The McNaughtons and the group Blue Lives Matter have petitioned Mayor Bill de Blasio to overturn the decision.
