Delaware Senator Tom Carper has admitted to beating his wife.
Carper initially represented Delaware in Congress, before serving two terms as governor. He has remained in the United States Senate since 2001.
When abuse accusations first emerged during his 1982 run for Congress, he claimed they were “without basis” and promised to sue the New York Post for libel.
Polling in the Delaware senate race remains scant. The most recent survey from the University of Delaware gave Carper a whopping 37 point lead over his Republican opponent Rob Arlett.
However, a July poll showed Carper under 50 percent and Arlett eight points behind.
