Five months after losing a bitter Senate primary, Congressman Evan Jenkins will resign to serve as a state Supreme Court justice.
Per the Huntington Herald-Dispatch:
Speaking on the House floor Thursday, Jenkins announced his retirement to the chamber, telling members he will fill the seat of former justice Robin Davis come Monday.
“Country roads are calling me home,” he said. “My state is facing a crisis in our judicial system, and I believe back home is where I’m needed most to best serve the people of West Virginia.”
Ticking off a list of his accomplishments as a congressman, Jenkins cited his work supporting Lily’s Place, which nurtures babies born to mothers with substance abuse problems; his backing of legislation to provide health care to more than 22,000 union miners who lost coverage as the result of bankruptcies in the industry; and West Virginia realizing the eighth-largest gross domestic product growth by state in 2017; and others.
According to the Secretary of State’s Office, Jenkins’ seat will remain vacant until January when the next term of Congress begins.
Democratic State Sen. Richard Ojeda and Republican House Delegate Carol Miller are running for the open West Virginia seat.
Despite then-candidate Donald Trump winning the district by nearly 50 points, Ojeda is up five percentage points in the latest poll.
